About De Beers Group Global Sightholder Sales
De Beers Group is the world’s leading diamond company, renowned for its unmatched expertise across the entire diamond value chain. Since 1888, the company has been at the forefront of diamond exploration, mining, marketing, and sales. Today, De Beers sells its rough diamonds through two primary channels: Global Sightholder Sales and Auctions.
Global Sightholder Sales accounts for roughly 90 percent of De Beers Group’s rough diamond sales by value. These diamonds are sold through long-term contracts to clients known as Sightholders during events called Sights. Sightholders are among the world’s most respected diamantaires, operating in major global diamond centers.
Sights are held ten times per year in Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. During these events, customers review their rough diamond allocations and then decide whether to purchase them. The rough diamonds originate from De Beers’ wholly owned and joint-venture mining operations, as well as from mines certified under the Responsible Jewelry Council Code of Practices and fully compliant with De Beers’ Best Practice Principles.
The Global Sightholder Sales customer community includes a diverse range of businesses—from large-scale international manufacturers and niche specialists to vertically integrated companies with their own retail operations. Most rough diamonds from Global Sightholder Sales are distributed from Gaborone, Botswana, where they are then exported by customers to international markets for cutting and polishing.
Supporting economic and social development in its diamond-producing partners remains a core priority for De Beers Group. As part of this commitment, Global Sightholder Sales also provides rough diamonds specifically for ‘beneficiation’ in producer countries such as Botswana, Canada, Namibia, and South Africa. In alignment with national and provincial agreements, unaggregated rough supply from Canada and Namibia is sold through Global Sightholder Sales and the Namibia Diamond Trading Company, respectively.
What is Beneficiation?
Beneficiation refers to the practice of adding value within diamond-producing countries, and it is a central part of how De Beers Group partners with governments to ensure that as many stages of the diamond processing journey as possible take place locally. By cutting and polishing diamonds within the producer country, De Beers helps support the growth of downstream diamond industries and strengthens local economies. For example, Canadian rough diamonds intended for beneficiation are sold through the Diamond Trading office in Botswana before being exported to Canada for cutting and polishing.
Because global demand for rough diamonds from Global Sightholder Sales exceeds supply, only businesses that demonstrate sufficient and consistent demand for De Beers Group rough diamonds qualify for Sightholder status, granting them the privilege of purchasing diamonds on a long-term contract basis. Companies that do not meet this demand threshold may instead qualify as Accredited Buyers.
